                      BackPack Program

Food Bank / LPS BackPack Program

The Food Bank/LPS BackPack Program debuted during the 2004 - 2005 school year

Clinton School, sending home food-filled backpacks on Friday afternoons with 50 kids.

The 2005-2006 school year had 50 students participating at each of three schools;

Clinton, Everett, and McPhee.

During the 06-07 School year, we distributed 500 backpacks a week to our

partner schools. Clinton, Elliott, McPhee, Everett, Hartley, West Lincoln, Belmont,

and Hawthorne. We have also started a BackPack Program of 10 students in Milford,

and have a commitment of 25 students next school year in Seward. The need is great.

Many of our community's children rely on Lincoln Public Schools lunchroom for their

most nutritious meal of the day. In some cases, the school breakfast or lunch is the

only meal a child receives. Census figures reveal there are 6,500 children under the

age of 18 living below the poverty line in Lancaster County. This school year, 4,551

students are participating in the LPS free lunch program. Census figures reveal there

are 6,500 children under the age of 18 living below the poverty line in Lancaster

Count. During the 06/07 school year over 4,000 Elementary School children

participated in the LPS free lunch program.

The food we use for the Food Bank/LPS BackPack Program consists of donated

and purchased food, to ensure a consistent supply of peanut butter and jelly,

concentrated fruit juice, boxes of cereal, of 1 pound package of rice,

macaroni and cheese, canned fruits , and more.

With the help of the Community Health Endowment, we are supplying each BackPack

Student with two pieces of fresh fruit weekly, and a voucher for a gallon of milk

on a monthly basis.

Join the Food Bank and Area Schools in our efforts to feed hungry children

and their families.
