In collaboration with more than 110 school partners in Southeast Nebraska, 867,983 meals were connected through our Child Hunger Programs last fiscal year. The BackPack Program connects more than 2,000 households with easy to prepare meals and snacks each Friday during the academic year. School Food Markets and Pantries are held in schools across Southeast Nebraska, where nearly 4,000 students and their families select food items from a monthly pop-up distribution in their school. The Lincoln Public Schools Emergency Pantry, which provides shelf-stable foods from a centrally located space three days a week during the school year, and the Student-Parent Voucher Program, vouchers to help student parents offset the cost of groceries, also aim to alleviate child hunger.

This realistic—and hopeful—story of food insecurity builds awareness of the issue of childhood hunger, increases empathy for people who are food insecure, and demonstrates how anyone can help end hunger. Lulu and the Hunger Monster™ empowers children to destigmatize the issue of hunger before the feeling turns into shame.
